Men can occasionally slack on their dental health. Based on some studies, men regularly seek out a dentist much less than their women counterparts. However, dental health is important for everyone, especially men. After all, there is a common link to gum disease and heart disease, and heart disease remains the number one killer among men. Luckily, there are plenty of things that you can do to better your dental health.
Advice For Men Regarding Dental Health:
1. Brush Regularly
This might seem like common knowledge, but many men avoid brushing the requisite number of times they should during each day. You should be brushing twice per day for a duration of 2 minutes. A lot of men don’t follow the 2-minute rule which is the requisite amount of time to adequately clean the teeth and gums of excess bacteria and plaque buildup.
2. Floss Regularly
Along with brushing, you should be flossing after each meal. Flossing after each meal is very important because any food particles that get stuck in-between your teeth and/or gum line can stick as food for bacteria. Therefore, you want to rid any excess food particles after you consume a meal so you aren’t creating an environment for bacteria to thrive. Ideally, you want to get expandable floss which can help you get in tight areas in your mouth that you might otherwise not be able to get to while providing enough surface area to properly clean the area.
3. Stop Eating Sugar
One of the worst offenders you can get in your diet is sugar. Sugar can be detrimental to your dental health in a big way. Unfortunately, sugar provides food to bacteria. Therefore, you are creating an environment where bacteria can live and thrive by consuming sugar and allowing sugar to rest on your teeth. It acts sort of like wood for termites. Therefore, if you must consume sugar, you want to swish your mouth with water after you eat it. Even better would be to chew a piece of xylitol gum which can help to normalize pH levels in your mouth and kill off bacteria.
4. Use Mouthwash
If you are looking to give yourself the best chance to kill off unwanted bacteria that can cause gum disease and bad breath, you should be using mouthwash at night. At nighttime, your mouth naturally produces less saliva which can keep bacteria at bay. Therefore, you should gargle mouthwash at night and preferably keep a bottle of water by your bedside. This can help those that get dry mouth at night. Dry mouth is something you want to avoid because it can provide a good environment for bacteria to live.
5. Visit The Dentist
You are going to want to schedule regular visits to the dentist. A lot of men don’t look to visit the dentist until they have a problem with their teeth. It is better to be proactive with your oral health. By visiting the dentist every 6 months, you should be able to get your teeth professionally cleaned and looked at enough. This will give you the best chance to fight off tooth decay and minimize the chances of developing gum disease. Dr. Jeffrey Bilotti, DDS will be able to see whether or not you are brushing your teeth properly and if you have any signs that you need to change your oral hygiene habits.
6. Get A Better Toothbrush
A lot of men might struggle to maintain their oral health because they are not quite certain how to brush their teeth. The truth is, a lot of people brush their teeth incorrectly. By getting a battery-powered toothbrush, you should be able to take a lot of the guesswork out of your toothbrush and best of all, it can keep you brushing your teeth for long enough with automatic timers.
By following the tips above, you should be able to improve your dental health considerably.
